Lighthouse

Strumble Head Lighthouse in Pembrokeshire photographed at the start of 2026

Lighthouse

The start of the year can often feel like a liminal space, slowly emerging from a natural high, or low of crazed chocolate consumption mixed with a overwhelm of more fresh air than normal thanks to a some hazy days spent more outside than inside. Through this haze, I wanted to get some sunset shots that I could use to match this dream-like state...

An incredibly blustery sunset dog walk took us out to Strumble Head, which looks out towards Ireland and its relatively, or at least locally famous lighthouse in Pembrokeshire resulted in these shots using the Fuji XT-3.

The 'master' lighthouse image - chosen for print

And some alternatives we were choosing from that are equally dreamy, and fun mix of colours, but ultimately not quite what we wanted for the walls...

The middle image is perhaps the 'best' image; interesting/better framing with the heather in the foreground and the headland taking your eyes out to sea beyond the lighthouse, nice light and clouds parting to see a North American bound plane with its contrails caught in the still visible to it sun etc, but they didn't sit quite as well alongside the shot I wanted to print of KP and the pup.

So here's the final diptych for printing...

I'll be trying two things for the next year; getting more opinionated in my processing, as well as looking to learn how to properly colour correct. This will hopefully prove helpful when printing photos and also improving my response to challenging and fast changing light at sunsets mean the camera is reading colour wildly differently when selecting a subject to shoot.
Something to also look to use the manual colour settings to avoid - for consistency.

Also, for funsies, here's some odd photos of horses in the nearby field being momentarily lit, every 8 seconds of so by the spinning beam from the lighthouse.

There’s a whole heap of drafts to finally publish so like and subscribe etc for upcoming notes on snowy Slovenia, solo marathons, YouTubes you likely missed in January.
